Our Journey

Background & History

Embibo Gender Initiative (EGI) began as a spark, a campaign to create violence-free communities and has grown into a movement rooted in resilience and hope. Born in Kamwenge, Uganda in 2020  from the vision of two young women confronting gender injustice and determined to nurture violence free communities.

More than a movement, it is a seed of empowerment, nurturing agency, amplifying voices, and cultivating transformative change for women, girls, and their communities.

EGI embodies the courage and fierceness of mothers and grandmothers who resisted oppression in silence. EGI was born not to help but nurture collective liberation as Lilla Watson says:

“If you have come to help, you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine then let us work together.”
