Who We Are?

Embibo Gender Initiative (EGI) is a grassroots rural gender equity movement

Based in South Western Uganda, we work with women and girls who are marginalised by gender-based violence, HIV, and the intersecting inequalities that limit their safety, health, and opportunities. Rooted in community and driven by feminist values, EGI stands alongside those most affected to create meaningful, lasting change.

Mission Statement:

To empower rural communities in Uganda by building their capacity to prevent gender-based violence and address social and sexual health challenges affecting women and girls.

Vision Statement:

A just and inclusive society where rural women, girls, and youth enjoy equal opportunities, free from gender-based violence and sexual health inequalities.

EGI advances this vision through advocacy, community capacity building, and direct service provision for survivors of sexual and domestic violence belonging to socially excluded groups. Through these interventions, we work to shift harmful norms, strengthen local leadership, and build safer, more empowered communities.

Core Values/ Tenets of Beliefs:

·         Love and Care. We believe in a politics of love for ourselves and for others. Feminist work can be exhausting, so we honour rest, protect our bodies, and create spaces where women and girls can heal without re-traumatisation or harm.

·         Equity and Equality. We recognise and legitimise each person’s lived experience. By acknowledging our own power and privilege, we commit to offering non-discriminatory access to support, services, and information, and we reject any exclusion of certain bodies.

·         Transparency and Accountability. We remain accountable to the communities we serve. We establish systems for respectful dialogue, collective planning, and responsible use of resources.

·         Justice and Fairness. We understand that true justice goes beyond institutional concepts and must prioritise healing, survivor needs, and restoring dignity.

·         Transformative Approaches. We challenge harmful social norms, confront power hierarchies, and acknowledge that violence is systemic even when enacted by individuals.

·         Meaningful Partnerships. We believe in collaborating with individuals and organisations that share our vision for gender justice, amplifying impact through solidarity.

·         Growth. We embrace growth as a difficult but essential process. Like a seed, we commit to evolving, learning, and transforming as we pursue lasting change.
